Thornton in Lonsdale is a village of just over 300 inhabitants with a grade II listed church, St Oswalds, with a tower which dates back to the 15th century. The church was the location of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s marriage to his first wife Louisa Hawkins in 1885.

  1. We were two weeks in West Burton in August and followed bits of many of your drives, and LOVED every moment. One of the last days, we drove from Thornton in Lonsdale to Dent and it was spectacular, We then went from Dent to the A684 back to Hawes. I thought that Rd from Thornton to Dent was on one of your drives, but don’t find it…..

    Anyway, we hope to go back next spring or fall (any recommendations for either??) and want to do more of your drives. They are the best, as are the Dales. Thank you for this website – it is a great resource.
