Chapel Le Dale

Information on Chapel-Le-Dale, Yorkshire

Chapel –le –Dale is a small village situated in a valley between the peaks of Ingleborough and Whernside. There are a couple of accommodation options including the 17th century Old Hill Inn, once a favourite of Winston Churchill. It’s a popular location with walkers as the valley is crossed by the 3 Peaks walks as well as the Ingleton Waterfalls walk. The village Church, St Leonards is the final resting place of over 200 navvies and their families who died of disease (including a smallpox epidemic) and accidents during the construction of the nearby Ribblehead viaduct in the 1870’s. The churchyard actually had to be extended to accommodate the unforeseen increase in bodies in this remote location.
